CELEBRACION DEL DIA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA

El pasado martes 15 de septiembre se celebro el aniversario número 188 de la Independencia de Honduras. En la Comunidad de Las Mangas se desarrollaron varias actividades conmemorando esta fecha. Junto con GUARUMA y el Comité Cívico, organizaron diferentes actividades que se llevaron a cabo con la participación de toda la comunidad.

Se inicio el pasado sábado 12 de septiembre con la actividad de encostalados desarrollada en el campo de la comunidad en horas de la tarde, dividiendo en tres categorías y los ganadores son: Julio Medina (niños), Berlín Alexander (varones), Karla Lobo (mujeres).

El día del lunes 14 de septiembre, inicio por la tarde una caravana de motos, bicicletas de los habitantes de la comunidad partiendo del puente hasta culminar en el campo. Luego tuvimos la oportunidad de ver una película mexicana que se llama “Por Mis Pistolas” de Mario Moreno Cantinflas en pantalla grande y al aire libre, colocándola en el campo, gracias a la colaboración del señor Miguel.

Al día siguiente, martes 15, se inicio a las 8:30 a.m., con una competencia de ciclismo que consistía de un pequeño circuito que recorría la comunidad por la calle principal, teniendo como punto de partida el puente grande, llegar al puente pequeño donde inicia la comunidad y retornar al punto de salida. De los cinco varones que participaron, fue Ever López quien gano y de las dos mujeres fue Allison Smoak. Por la tarde se organizó un torneo de futbol entre las comunidades de Las Mangas, El Pital y El Naranjo para los menores de 17 años. Primer lugar El Pital, segundo lugar El Naranjo y tercero Las Mangas.

Durante se desarrollaban estas actividades, se elaboraba la carroza, con el apoyo de Ulises Soriano, Ophélie Cros, María Lobo y Orlin Murillo, que serviría para el desfile de la tarde. Queremos agradecer al señor Lorenzo Smoak, quien nos presto su carro que sirvió para hacer la decoración.

Después de tanta preparación, llego el momento más importante de las celebraciones; el desfile, que encabezaba con la carroza quien en ella iban: Katherine Michelle (Reina de Las Mangas), Katherine Lobo (Niña de Independencia de la escuela), Estefany Martínez (Niña de la Independencia del Kinder), Nicole (India Bonita), seguidamente por una escolta de banderas de los países centroamericanos, el grupo del cuadro de danzas con sus respectivos trajes típicos, algunos niños de la escuela portando un mural que llevaban imágenes de nuestro próceres, héroes y símbolos nacionales, luego jóvenes y habitantes de la comunidad con antorchas, y por ultimo un pequeño grupo de jinetes con sus respectivos caballos, culminando el desfiles con un gran grupo de motociclistas y de bicicletas. Finalizo el desfile en las instalaciones de GUARUMA.

Donde dio inicio al programa del acto cívico, teniendo como actividades: canto de nuestro Himno Nacional, palabras del maestro Ermelito Rivera, Premiación de los ganadores de la competencia de ciclismo por parte de la Maestra María Lobo, interpretaciones de canciones por parte del Campamento de Lorenzo Smoak, baile de danzas folklóricas y culminando con una pequeña fiesta donde los habitantes aprovecharon a disfrutar para bailar.

Fue la oportunidad para que algunos extranjeros presentes, pudieran descubrir una parte importante de la cultura hondureña. Una jornada con muchas actividades acompañadas con un gran número de personas de la comunidad y de otras vecinas. Todo esto fue con el propósito que la comunidad se involucrara y también el fortalecimiento de nuestra identidad nacional.

Muy satisfechos con la respuesta de la gente, les damos las gracias por su apoyo, colaboración y participación, fue un éxito. Esperamos que el año próximo, sigamos desarrollando y mejorando esta clase de eventos. ¡VIVA HONDURAS Y SU GENTE!

The past September 15th, Guaruma and the community of Las Mangas celebrated the 188th anniversary of the Independence of Honduras with several activities taking place for that occasion.

On September 12th, the first activity was a bag race that took place in Las Mangas’ soccer field and with 3 different categories: kids, women and men. The winners were: Julio Medina (kids), Berlin Alexander (men) and Karla Lobo (women).

On Monday September 14th, a moto and bike race took place in the community, leaving from Las Mangas bridge up to the soccer field. Later at night, the community gathered in the soccer field to watch in a giant screen a Mexican movie called “Por Mis Pistolas” from director Mario Moreno Cantinflas.

On Tuesday, the 15th of September, Independence Day started with a bike race. Out of the five contestants in the men's category, the winner was Ever López. For the women’s category, Allison Smoak won over her sole rival Karla Lobo. Then a soccer game took place for the below 17 years old youngters from the communities of Las Mangas, El Pital and El Naranjo. The community of El Pital won the tournament, second was El Naranjo and Las Mangas was third.

The same day in the afternoon, Ulises Soriano, Ophélie Cros, María Lobo y Orlin Murillo had the duty to decorate the car that would later serve as the rig for the parade. Thank you to Lorenzo Smoak who kindly let us use his car for that event.

After so much preparation came the parade, which started with the youngsters wearing Honduras traditional clothes and with a torch parade full of different colours. In the rig were Katherine Michelle (Beauty Queen of Las Mangas), Katherine Lobo (Girl of Independence), Estefany Martinez (Girl of Independence from Kinder), and Nicole (India Bonita). The parade stopped at Guaruma’s so that people could come to the final ceremony. The ceremony started with the trophies given to the various activities contestants, then with some singing and traditional Honduran dances. For the few non-Honduran attendees, it was interesting to discover an important part of Honduras’ culture.

The ceremony turned into a party that went on until late at night with music, dancing and a very good time for everybody. We were all very happy to be part of such an event that we won’t forget anytime soon!

LIMPIEZA DE LA COMUNIDAD DE LAS MANGAS

Se inicio el día viernes 11 de septiembre, con la recolección de la basura y el bacheo de la calle principal, con el apoyo de los alumnos de la Escuela “El Progreso” de la Comunidad de Las Mangas, con la colaboración y supervisión de los profesores: Ermelito Rivera, Ernesto Herrera, la Maestra del Kínder María Lobo y los miembros de GUARUMA: Ulises Soriano Palma y Ophélie Cros.

Al día siguiente, sábado 12, se inició muy temprano la actividad de encalar los árboles y postes que se encuentran a la orilla de la calle principal, bajo la responsabilidad de Ulises Soriano acompañado de algunos estudiantes de GUARUMA de la Clase de Educación Ambiental.

Todo esto con el principal objetivo de tener una comunidad limpia y atractiva para nuestros residentes y visitantes. Gracias a todos los que participaron y colaboraron. A seguir trabajando por nuestra comunidad.

On September 11th, we started the day with a clean-up of the community by picking up garbage, and also by filling the many holes of the main road with the help of the kids of Las Mangas’ school El Progreso, its Director Ermelito Rivera, the teacher of Kinder María Lobo, Ulises Soriano Palma and Ophélie Cros, both from Guaruma.
The next day, Ulises and some kids decided to paint trees and the poles of the community in white to make it look more colourful.

The purpose of such activities is to keep a clean and nice community for its inhabitants and also visitors that come to Las Mangas. Thank you to everybody who helped us doing so. We have to keep going on with such activities !

CELEBRACION DEL DIA DEL NIÑO

El pasado 10 de Septiembre, Guaruma celebró el Día del Niño, regalando y compartiendo con ellos con 4 piñatas; 2 eran para los niños de la Comunidad de Las Mangas y otras 2 eran para los del Pital de la Cuenca del Rio Cangrejal.

En Las Mangas, empezamos primero en la mañana con los niños del Kínder acompañados por la Maestra María Lobo, Ophélie Cros y Ulises Soriano, que tuvieron en total 3 piñatas y que adquirieron muchos confites y bombones. Doña Linda nos permitió usar su jardín para realizar esta actividad de las piñatas y por eso le agradecemos mucho por este gesto. Todos se pusieron en fila para su turno de reventar dichas piñatas. Después, en la tarde fue el turno de los más grandes a disfrutar de la piñata.

La otra actividad se llevo a cabo a las 5:00 p.m., en el Aula de GUARUMA presentando la Película “Madagascar 2”, gracias a la colaboración de Ulises Soriano.

Fue un día muy entretenido y alegre, donde ellos disfrutaron cada momento. ¡MUCHAS FELICIDADES NIÑOS DE HONDURAS!

The past September 10th was the Kids’ day and for that special occasion Guaruma brought 4 candy stuffed boxes (what is called here a “piñata”); 2 were for the kids of Las Mangas and other 2 for the kids of El Pital.

In Las Mangas, the teacher María Lobo, Ophélie Cros and Ulises Soriano started the activity with the kids of Kinder who had 3 “piñatas”, all of them full of sweets and candies. Doña Linda was nice enough to let us use her yard and for that we are very grateful to her. The purpose of this activity is to destroy the “piñata” while it is hold in the air so that all sweets drop and the kids have to pick them up.
Then in the afternoon we celebrated it again but with the oldest kids of Las Mangas.

Later in the day, the kids gathered in Guaruma’s classroom to watch the movie “Madagascar 2” under the responsibility of Ulises Soriano.

The day was very entertaining and the kids enjoyed every moment of it. Happy Kids Day to all of them!

Guaruma en Expo Talento CEUTEC 2009

Este 10 de Septiembre Guaruma tuvo una pequeña presentación en el Centro Universitario Tecnológico (CEUTEC) Campus La Ceiba esta institución nos invito a participar en una muestra de arte que tuvieron los estudiantes de la carrera de diseño grafico.

A las 12:15 pm se inauguro esta exposición con la presencia de uno de los Fundadores y Rector de Asuntos Exteriores de la universidad el Lic. Chong Wong, también estuvieron presentes del evento, la Directora Noemí Discua entre otras autoridades del campus.

Como parte del evento se dio un pequeño refrigerio y se permitió a los invitados observar las diferentes exhibiciones de arte.

En el evento estaban expuestos los trabajos de diferentes estudiantes y el uso de diferentes técnicas como: dibujos con pastel, carbón y pinturas sobre manta entre otros trabajos. Guaruma también tuvo un espacio donde mostro las fotografías tomadas por nuestros jóvenes estudiantes.

Le queremos dar las gracias a la Lic. Ana Karina Flores por habernos apoyado y a los miembros del club rotario de la Ceiba por darnos la oportunidad de presentarnos en este evento y esperamos formalizar mas alianzas con tan prestigiosa institución y así poder apoyarnos mutuamente.

On September, 10th, CEUTEC (La Ceiba’s University of Technology) invited Guaruma to participate to an exhibition conducted by the students of graphic design.

The event started at 12:15 pm, when Chong Wong, Creator of Exterior Matters and the Director Noemí Discua inaugurated the exhibition.

Then, the attendees were given a small snack while taking a look at the different showpieces. It was the opportunity to discover the student’s work: pastel paintings, coal and painting on cloth and Guaruma was able to display the students photos to the public.

We would like to thank Miss Ana Karina Flores for her help and for giving us the opportunity to promote Guaruma’s products and activities. Hopefully, there will be more similar projects very soon.

CELEBRACION DE FERIA CULTURAL EN YARUCA

El pasado sábado 6 de Septiembre del presente año, se llevo a cabo una celebración Cultural en la Comunidad de Yaruca, la cual fue organizada por la Organización Un Mundo, con la colaboración participación de Guaruma y Arte Acción. El evento tuvo lugar en el Centro Educativo Básico Minerva de dicha comunidad, contando con la presencia de unos 50 niños de varias comunidades de La Cuenca, entre ellas están Las Mangas, El Pital, Toncotín, Yaruca y El Urraco.

Participaron unos 25 niños y jóvenes estudiantes que pertenecen al programa educativo integral que brinda GUARUMA en las comunidades del Las Mangas y El Pital.

Fue la ocasión de presentar unas actividades organizadas por parte de cada organización; Brian Goetz, de Un Mundo toco guitara y cantó unas canciones que algunas de ellas fueron compuesta por los niños de Yaruca y Guaruma exhibió algunas de sus fotografías que fueron tomadas por los estudiantes. La tercera organización involucrada fue la de Arte Acción de Copán, representada por dos jóvenes voluntarios llamados Londin y Dionisio; ellos presentaron un documental educativo que hicieron con unos jóvenes de Copán y exhibieron manualidades que elaboraron algunos niños de la cuenca. También los miembros de cada organización dieron una charla sobre los propósitos de la misma y lo que se está llevando a cabo en la actualidad.

Dentro de las actividades se organizó los juegos tradicionales bajo la responsabilidad de Ulises Soriano que forma parte de la Organización de GUARUMA.

Queremos agradecer a la organización Un Mundo por invitarnos a participar en este evento porque fue una oportunidad para los estudiantes como una experiencia de intercambio de conocimientos y convivencia con los demás niños y jóvenes.

On September 6th, Guaruma was invited to participate to a cultural event in the community of Yaruca. Said event was organized by Un Mundo and for that occasion they had invited 2 volunteers from a Copan organization named Arte Acción. The event took place in the Minerva Education Center of Yaruca, and was attended by some 50 youngsters from La Cuenca (Las Mangas, El Pital, Toncontin, Yaruca y El Urraco).

Guaruma came along with about 25 of its students both from Las Mangas and El Pital.

During the event, each organization presented activities; Brian Goetz from Un Mundo played guitar and sang songs that were written by the kids of Yaruca, Guaruma displayed some of its photos taken by the students. The third organization, Arte Acción, was represented by 2 young volunteers named Londin and Dionisio; they showed us a short educational documentary film they made in Copan and exhibited some small books made by the kids of La Cuenca.
The staff of each organization then made a little speech about their involvement and work and the goal of attending this event.

Then, Ulises Soriano of Guaruma started the outdoor activities with the kids and of course soccer was part of it!

We would like to thank the Un Mundo Organization for inviting us to that event because it was a good opportunity for our students to get along and mix with other kids.

Feria Ambiental en HSBC

En esta ocasión estamos agradeciendo a la Institución Bancaria HSBC ya que el pasado 21 de Agosto del presente año fuimos invitados a una Feria Ambiental realizada en la Oficina Principal de La Ceiba de dicha institución.
En esta actividad también se conto con la participación otras personas que elaboran tarjetas, retrateras con papel reciclado y otra que elaboran carteras y bisutería de coco, por parte de nuestra Organización estuvimos ofreciendo los servicios de sendero y los productos que se elaboran como calendarios, postales y stickers.
En esta actividad estuvimos representados por Ulises Soriano y Lilian Sánchez que son parte del staff Guaruma quienes estuvieron explicando nuestra labor en La Cuenca y mostrando todos los productos en exposición.
También contamos con los productos que elaboran en Artesanías Saravia como ser bateas, barquitos de madera y con Cooperativa Juan Pablo II que demostraron los edredones, cojines, cortinas entre cosas.

Le queremos dar las gracias a HSBC por darnos la oportunidad de presentarnos en esta actividad y esperamos poder participar en muchas más.

On September 21st, Guaruma was invited to participate to an environmental fair in the main office of HSBC bank in La Ceiba. Ulises Soriano and Lilian Sanchez attended this event to represent Guaruma and display some of our products.

Other attendees include a paper recycling company, a bakery company and Guaruma was there to promote its services such as its trails, its photos, calendars, postcards and stickers.

We were also promoting hand-made products of Artesania Saravia, another company in La Cuenca that sells art craft such as wood boats, earrings and also the Juan Pablo II Cooperative.

We would like to thank the HSBC bank for inviting us to that event and giving us the opportunity to promote Guaruma services and products.

CELEBRACION DEL DIA DE LA BANDERA

El día 1 de septiembre se celebró el día de la bandera y fue la ocasion para los niños del Kinder y de la maestra María Lobo de cantar el himno nacional de Honduras. Ulises se encargo de izar la bandera, explicando su significacion a los niños: las cinco estrellas representan los paises de Central America (Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica y Honduras) y las partes azules representan los oceanos Atlantico y Pacifico. Fue un momento muy emocionante tanto para los niños como para nosotros al ver esos niños cantar.

On September 1st, Honduras celebrates what is called "El dia de la bandera" and for that special occasion the kids of the Kindergarten along with their teacher Maria Lobo sang the National Anthem. Ulises hung the flag of Honduras and took the opportunity to explain the meaning of the five stars on the flag: each of them represents a country of Central America (Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Honduras) and the blue parts represent the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It was very lovely to see those kids so proud to sing their anthem.

NUEVA CASA PARA LA VECINA TUTTI

Gracias a la generosidad de todas las personas de la comunidad de Las Mangas, nuestra vecina Tutti y su familia tiene una casa nueva con paredes de madera y techo de zcinc. El proyecto se genero durante una reunión con miembros de guaruma, Recoturh y personas de la comunidad el pasado 12 de agosto del presente año cuando Guaruma se comprometió en coordinar este proyecto. Se formo un grupo de trabajo para ir a colectar donaciones en la comunidad y elaborar un plan de trabajo para la reconstrucción de dicha casa. Gracias a la generosidad de la gente, logramos colectar los fondos necesarios para la compra de los materiales.. El vecino Lorenzo Smoak nos permitió usar su carro para transportar el material de Ceiba a Las Mangas. Contamos con el apoyo de voluntarios y por eso queremos agradecer a toda la comunidad por su generosidad y su ayuda porque ese proyecto hubiera sido imposible llevar a cabo sin la contribución de todos. Estamos muy contentos y orgullosos porque en solo 15 días logramos ejecutar ese proyecto desde el principio hasta el fin. Ahora, la señora Tutti y su familia pueden dormir sin el miedo de despertarse mojados por la lluvia! A NEW HOME FOR TUTTI AND HER FAMILY

Thanks to the generosity of all the people of the community of Las Mangas, our dear neighbor Tutti and her family have now a new home made out of wood and zinc roof. The re-construction project started the past 12th of August during a meeting with Recoturh when Guaruma took part of this project.
A group of people from the community was formed and went to collect donations from the families in Las Mangas. Thanks to their amazing generosity, we managed to have enough money to buy the necessary materials and with our neighbour Lorenzo Smoak we were able to use his pick-up car to bring the material from La Ceiba. As for the construction of the house, many people worked as volunteers and without the help of the whole community this project would have been impossible to run. Also, we are very proud and satisfied because we have managed to run this project in only 15 days, from the beginning until the end and now our friend Tutti and her family can sleep well, without getting wet by the rain!

PUENTE DE LA MURALLA ESTA REPARADO

El puente colgante que hace enlace entre la comunidad de La Muralla a la comunidad de Las Mangas ha sido reparado con la ayuda de los miembros de ambas comunidades. Guaruma puso su granito de arena en entregar unas varillas como donación y otros pequeños insumo. Esa reparación era muy necesaria antes de que la época de lluvia llegue porque cada día las familias necesitan usar el puente para ir a trabajar o comprar comida en la comunidad vecina de Las Mangas y ese puente es el único medio que existe de igual manera es la vía de acceso de muchos jóvenes a sus centros escolares, con estas mejoras no solo estamos apoyando la educación de los jóvenes de la comunidad de la Muralla sino que salvaguardamos su integridad física y evitamos accidentes.

LA MURALLA'S BRIDGE IS FIXED

The hanging bridge that links the community of La Muralla to Las Mangas has finally been fixed with the help of volunteers from both communities. For this project, Guaruma bought material like some iron bars as part of a donation. The repairing was very necessary for the families of La Muralla as everyday many people have to use this bridge to reach Las Mangas and go to work, go to school or simply buy food and this is the only way to do so.

This projects directly helps families to live better but it also prevent many potential accidents from occurring.

Guaruma monta Exposición en Uniplaza

El pasado 31 de Julio y el 01 de Agosto del presente año se monto una exposición el Centro Comercial Uniplaza con el apoyo y coordinación de la Lic. Fany Baca Castro Administradora de dicho centro comercial, quien brindó un espacio a Organización para que pudieran presentar sus fotografías, calendarios y todos los productos que son elaborados por los jóvenes estudiantes de la cuenca del rio cangrejal.

Esta exposición fue de gran importancia para Guaruma porque se dio a conocer con la sociedad ceibeña, tomando ventaja que los fines de semana asisten muchas personas al centro comercial Uniplaza para realizar sus compras o simplemente a distraerse un poco.

Como parte de la exposición se conto con la presencia del Joven Guaruma Camilo López quien nos acompaño ese día para hablarle a las personas sobre su trabajo con la fotografía y el dibujo.

Le agradecemos cordialmente a la Lic. Fany Baca Castro por invitarnos a participar siempre en las actividades que realiza en el Centro Comercial Uniplaza y esperamos poder en poco tiempo poder firmar una carta de acuerdo entre ambas empresas.

En esta ocasión queremos agradecer a Pepe Herrero por su valiosa donación e instalación de un aro de basket-ball que fue ubicada en la terraza del Kínder y de Guaruma, los jóvenes están muy contentos por tener un lugar donde ir a jugar baloncesto en su tiempo libre, esperamos así organizar unos buenos partidos con los estudiantes.

Guaruma tiene nuevos voluntarios

Queremos darles la bienvenida a 2 nuevos voluntarios de Guaruma; Lilian María Sánchez Mejía y Ulises Ernesto Soriano Palma.
Lilian 24 años y Ulises 27 años son Licenciados en Ecoturismo egresados de la Universidad Metropolitana de Honduras en Tegucigalpa. Ambos vienen con mucho entusiasmo y ganas de apoyar a Guaruma tanto en las clases de medio-ambiente como en desarrollando varios proyectos y actividades.
Les agradecemos a ellos dos por apoyarnos y le deseamos la mejor de las suertes en este nuevo proyecto que inician.

Guaruma wants to welcome two new voluteers: Lilian María Sánchez Mejía y Ulises Ernesto Soriano Palma. Lilian, 24 years old and Ulises, 27, both have a degree in Eco-tourism from the University of Tegucigalpa. They will be in charge of environemental classes and of outdoor activities. We thank them for their support and wish them all the best in this new experience.

El pasado 18 de Junio del presente año la Organización Guaruma fue invitada a participar en la Feria de Aniversario XXIII de la Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras (UTH) campus la Ceiba, el evento tuvo lugar en el parqueo de dicho centro iniciando alrededor de las 5:00 de la tarde, donde hubo diferentes tipos de actividades coordinadas por los estudiantes de la carrera de turismo de la UTH campus la ceiba y teniendo como parte de los atractivos las comidas típicas, bailes garífunas, presentaciones artísticas y de deportes por parte de los alumnos de la institución.

Guaruma tuvo su espacio para poder mostrar algunos de los productos que elabora como ser los calendarios, trifolios, entre otros y de igual manera se promovieron los servicios que ofrece de senderos, charlas ambientales, recorridos interpretativos, expediciones entre otros, de igual manera tuvimos presentación de dibujos hechos con la técnica pastel, que fueron elaborados por los estudiantes en las clases de arte que impartió Gabriela Zschecher y con la participación de nuestros orgullo artístico el Joven Guaruma Adolfo López.

Como parte de la Feria Adolfo López demostró sus dotes en el dibujo y quien junto con la instructora de medio ambiente Sandra Fischer y el coordinador de Guaruma Plus Mario Mejía, estuvieron hablando e invitando a los estudiantes y asistentes de la Universidad a participar en las diferentes actividades que Guaruma realiza.

Este evento fue una muy buena oportunidad para Guaruma ya que había varias personas que no conocían de la organización por lo que agradecemos a la UTH por esta experiencia, de igual manera invitamos a todas las personas a participar de estos tan importantes e interesantes eventos que fortalecen nuestro patriotismo e interés sobre nuestros recursos naturales y culturales.

Guaruma attends UTH local festival in La Ceiba

On June 18th, Guaruma attended the 23rd Anniversary of Honduras Technological University (UTH) in La Ceiba. The event was held in the university’s campus and at 5pm various activities organized by the UTH’ students of tourism started; there were typical Honduran dishes, Garifuna dances, and artistic and sports presentations run by the university students.

For this event, Guaruma had a stand were we displayed our various products; it was an opportunity for Gabriela Zschecher (Garuma’s Art Teacher) and Guaruma’s gifted student Adolfo López to promote our calendars, photos, student artwork and also our services such as nature trails and tours around Pico Bonito.

It was also an occasion for Adolfo López to show some of his artwork that he has made during his classes with Guaruma, and together with Science Teacher Sandra Fischer and Activities Coordinator Mario Mejía, they invited the university students and staff to discover Guaruma’s activities.

Thanks to this event, Guaruma got to be known by more people who hopefully now have a stronger interest in protecting the environment. Thank you to UTH for inviting us to this event.

Dia de feria para Guaruma

El sábado 6 de junio, Guaruma organizó una gran feria gastronómica llamada “Descubriendo Nuestro Orgullo” conto con varias actividades para celebrar el fin del semestre y también asistir a la transmisión del partido de futbol entre la Selección Nacional de Honduras y los EEUU.
Guaruma tuvo el gusto de recibir a Nancy McGirr fundadora de Guaruma y Fotokids, quien vino de Guatemala y trajo a dos miembros del staff de Fotokids: Berlin Juárez Aparicio y Andrés Sosof Rocché.
Ese día fue también la despidida para Marcus Sabini, el Asistente Director e Instructor de Fotografía; después de un año trabajando para Guaruma, Marcus regresó a EEUU, su país de origen. Le deseamos mucha suerte y éxitos en sus proyectos futuros.
La feria empezó a las 2:00 pm cuando la gente de las comunidades trajo comida típica de Honduras para venderla se podía comer chicharrón con yuca, nacatamales, arroz con leche, horchata, frijoles, tortillas entre otras cosas.
Más tarde, las actividades comenzaron, escuchamos a los niños del Kínder cantar el Himno Nacional de Honduras con la ayuda de la Maestra María Lobo.
Para Marcus, fue la ocasión de hacer su último discurso frente de la comunidad y a sus estudiantes para agradecerles de su aporte. Luego otros miembros de Guaruma (Sandra, Ophelie, Juan, Gabriela y Miguel) también hablaron de su desempeño con Guaruma y de su relación con la comunidad, durante el evento hubo también concurso de papelote.
Después se hizo entrega de diplomas para los tres mejores estudiantes de cada clase, tanto de Las Mangas como del Pital. Fueron distribuidos diplomas en computación, medio ambiente y fotografía.
La profesora de arte y baile Gabriela presentó unos de sus bailes y después seis de los estudiantes bailaron en pareja música folclórica vestidos con traje típico de Honduras.
Para finalizar el evento las 6:00 pm en el salón Guaruma todos se reunieron para presenciar en una pantalla gigante el partido de fútbol entre Honduras y EEUU. Desafortunadamente, Honduras perdió el juego 2-1.
Esa feria fue un gran éxito para Guaruma y la comunidad porque mucha gente disfruto del evento.

CELEBRATION DAY FOR GUARUMA

On Saturday, 6th June, Guaruma organized a big party to celebrate the end of the school year with its students and various activities were held during the afternoon, before the transmission of the soccer game between Honduras and the USA. That day, Guaruma was honoured with the presence of Nancy McGirr, Founder of Guaruma and Fotokids who came directly from Guatemala and brought along with her two staff members of Fotokids: Berlin Juárez Aparicio and Andres Sosof Rocché.

Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Marcus Sabini, who left Honduras and went back to the US after one year as Guaruma’s Assistant Director and Photography instructor. We wish him all the best in his future projects.

The event started at about 2pm with a food exhibition where the locals of Las Mangas had prepared typical Honduran dishes such as chicharron, tamales, yuca, arroz con leche, frijoles, tortillas…all of these freshly hand-made and delicious!

Then, in the middle of the afternoon, the activities started. First, we had the delight of seeing the kids from the Kinder sing the Honduras National Anthem, along with their teacher Maria Lobo.
The occasion also marked Marcus’ last speech in front of the community members and the students and he thanked them for their support throughout his whole year in Honduras.
Then the rest of the Guaruma team (Sandra, Ophélie, Juan, Selma and Miguel) briefly talked about their work and involvement with Guaruma.

After that, it was time for Guaruma to start the graduation ceremony where the best three students of each class (both for Las Mangas and El Pital) were awarded diplomas.
The art and dance teacher, Gabriela presented some of her own choreographies and we all had the chance to discover her talent. She then introduced a dance that she had taught to her students where they wore typical outfits from Honduras.

At 6pm, it was time to see the International Soccer match between Honduras and the USA. We had managed to borrow the TV cable from Las Cabanas for this very special event and were able to see it in a wide screen .The whole room was getting really excited and everybody was rooting for Honduras, even Marcus who is from the USA. Unfortunately, even though Honduras scored the first goal and played well, they lost the game 2-1.

This event was definitely a success as a lot of people came and kindly helped us to coordinate the activities.

Campaña de salud

Los jóvenes de Guaruma participaron a una campaña de salud, gracias al apoyo de dos medicos del Centro Regional de Litoral Atlantico (hospital Atlantida) de La Ceiba. Con el objectivo de tomar muestras de sangre para examenes de salud de los niños de la cuenca del Rio Cangrejal. Los medicos visitaron la escuela del Progreso en Las Mangas, el colegio del Pital y el instituto El Rey del Rio Viejo.“Esta camapana fue de mucho beneficio ya que de esta manera se pueden detectar algunas enfermedades a tiempo y prevenir futuras.”

On May 8th, two nurses from La Ceiba hospital came to visit the students of Guaruma in order to collect the students’ blood and then analyze it to detect potential health problems. The doctors went to the school of El Progreso in Las Mangas, then headed to High School Polivaliente of El Pital and finally to the High School El Rey in Rio Viejo. About fifty students gave their blood and even if some of them were a bit scared, the majority responded positively to it and felt like heroes in the end!

The new educational program called Guaruma Plus has been created and its objective is to strengthen the students’ technical skills that they have developed during their year class with Guaruma bringing them a professional background. This program will also help the students to use their creativity in any work opportunities they have.

Esta señora dió a los alumnos de Guaruma tintas para escribir y hojas de trabajo ademas de material más específico para el staff de Guaruma. Agradecemos tambien a esta señora por el regalo de un lindísimo bordado que elaboró con sus manos: lleva fotos de los alumnos de Guaruma que asistieron el año pasado a un taller de pintura gracias a la disponibilidad y generosidad de esta misma persona.

Una Campaña ambiental en la Cuenca para Semana Santa

Como una organización ambiental GUARUMA está encargada de las campañas ambientales y de saneamiento de la Cuenca durante la Semana Santa. Dentro de nuestras clases se han limpiado la comunidad de El Pital y en la comunidad de Las Mangas colaboramos con la escuela El Progreso. Se han pintado rótulos en los basureros, limpiaron el rio y los senderos de GUARUMA. Poco a poco llegamos a una comunidad limpia! El proyecto más grande que se tiene es con José Herrero de USAID/MIRA en cooperación con la Cruz Roja. Se limpió toda la cuenca y al mismo tiempo se dió la información a los turistas donde pueden poner su basura.

Being an environmental organization GUARUMA is in charge of the environmental clean-up campanges of la Cuenca in Easter Week. In our clases we have cleaned up the comunity El Pital and in Las Mangas we cooperated with the school El Progreso. We have painted signs on the trash cans, cleaning the river and trails de Guaruma. Little by little we are getting to a clean and nice comunity ! Our biggest project is dealt with Jose Herrero from USAID/MIRA in cooporation with Red Cross. We are going to clean up the whole water basin and at the same time give out information to tourist where to throw their garbage.

Un jardin Ambiental en Guaruma Las Mangas

Los voluntarios de la Organización Guaruma con el apoyo de Marlon, Berlín Alexander y Fernando Leónidas, alumnos de Guaruma y miembros de la comunidad de las Mangas, empezaron la limpieza del Jardín de Guaruma Las Mangas. Aprovecharon para construir un poso frente al portón de Guaruma para que el agua de lluvia no cree inundación. Guaruma vuelve a tener un jardín limpio, ordenado, fresco y floral.
Los voluntarios viviendo en la casa de los Voluntarios en Guaruma Las Mangas hacen compost, lo que les dieron la oportunidad de utilizar este compost para la tierra de las plantas y flores del jardín.

Guaruma staff with the collaboration of students, Marlon Dominguez, Berlin Alexander and Fernando Lobo, cleaned the Guaruma garden in Las Mangas. They all helped to build a canal by the front gate to allow water to escape during heavy rains. Eventhough that was so warm and sunny outside, the energy and determination of everybody helped to get Guaruma a clean and
organized garden with more flowers and more environmental feel to it. The Guaruma Las Mangas staff used compost that was created here to plant bushes and plants as well as to help the trees grow.

Durante una semana, Selma Illa, Mario Mejía, Gustavo Canizales y Nelsina da Silva, fueron a visitar diferentes grupos de interés de la Ceiba y alrededor, grupos como WWF, Fucsa, Agencias de viajes, Hoteles, Tour Operadoras entre otros. Para ofrecerles las carpetas de promoción de las actividades y servicios de Guaruma. Muchos de los grupos felicitaron el trabajo de Guaruma por su colaboración con niños tan profesionales. Esperamos que el impacto de estas visitas sea fuerte para Guaruma.

For one week, Selma Illa, Mario Mejía, Gustavo Canizales y Nelsina da Silva visited different specific organizations in La Ceiba and around, such as WWF, FUCSA, Travel agencies, hotels, etc… to promote the servicies and activities of Guaruma. Many of those organizations congratulated the hardwork of Guaruma because it deals with such professional kids. Guaruma hopes that the impact of those visits will be helpful for Guaruma.

En Febrero del presente, la organización Guaruma tuvo el honor de ser visitada por Toby Bloom, Directora de Ecoturismo de la Vida Silvestre de HSI, quien además de hacer amistad con el staff y alumnos de Guaruma tuvo la oportunidad de conocer las obras de arte que hace años que han soñado tener y hoy son posibles gracias a los aportes que nos brinda.
Después de intensas jornadas de clases en el salon Guaruma en las Mangas, los 15 Guías Locales “Interpretes de la Naturaleza” fueron al Monumento Natural Marino y Archipiélago de Cayos Cochinos. Han completados exitosamente su formación y están aprovechando los Recursos Naturales de una forma responsable, fortaleciendo los programas de Ecoturismos que se realizan en cada área protegida. Al mismo tiempo los Guías cumplen la función de guarda recursos en sus comunidades asegurando la permanencia de los mismos para las/los hijos de nuestros Hijos. cabe destacar que esta capacitación se llevo a cabo gracias al aporte de HSI.
Durante el evento, se les entrego libros Guías de campo con información pertinente a cada zona para ampliar sus conocimientos, cabe mencionar que este material fue elaborado por los jóvenes de GURUMA-PLUS.

Reunión de los Padres de Guaruma en Las Mangas y en El Pital

Este año Guaruma aprovechó para introducir a su nuevo Director Ejecutivo Francisco Cabañas presentando sus objetivos para Guaruma.

On Sunday, March 15, Guaruma held the 2009 Parent’s Meeting in both Las Mangas and in El Pital. The bi-annual meeting is held to give the parents a chance to voice concerns or questions. The meeting is also important as a way to introduce new staff and the upcoming lessons and projects for the students.

Concurso de Foto a Cuero y Salado, FUCSA - WWF

Estudiantes y Trabajadores de Guaruma fueron invitados a Cuero y Salado por un concurso de fotografía financiado por FUCSA Fundación Cuero y Salado y WWF World Wildlife Fund. Once de los mejores fotógrafos de Las Mangas y de El Pital tuvieron la oportunidad de ir al evento un Domingo. El clima fue un poco nubloso y la luz no era muy buena para la fotografía pero los alumnos (y empleados) regresaron con fotos impresionantes. Los invitados fueron separados en dos grupos y cada grupo tuvo la oportunidad de hacar un tour de lancha y una caminata. Los guías locales fueron excelentes y ojala que Guaruma puede volver a Cuero y Salado pronto. Los estudiantes que fueron a Cuero y Salado tuvieron la oportunidad de asistir al evento del Hora del Planeta en La Ceiba, el 28 de Marzo en lo cual se conocia los ganadores del concurso. Guaruma students and staff were invited to Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge as part of a photography contest made possible by FUCSA, Cuero y Salado Foundation, and WWF, World Wildlife Fund. Eleven of Guaruma’s best photographers from Las Mangas and El Pital were able to attend the one-day event in February. The overcast weather wasn’t ideal for photography but the students (and staff) came back with some amazing images. The attendees were split into two groups as both received a tour by boat and by land. The guides were excellent and Guaruma hopes to return to Cuero y Salado soon. The students who attended were invited to a WWF event in La Ceiba on March 28, 2009 called La Hora del Planeta. Guaruma is very proud because many of its students won prizes for their photos of Cuero y Salado.

GUARUMA participió a la Conferencia Global Fund for Children en Nicaragua

En Enero 2009, Guaruma fue invitado a participar al Encuentro Regional 2009 del Fondo Global en Managua Nicaragua. El Director Asistente e Instructor de Fotografía Marcus Sabini, recibió el honor de asistir a la conferencia con Laura Sarvide de México. Su tema fue Fortalecimiento Institucional y esta información va a ayudar Guaruma en el futuro. La conferencia llevaba la presencia de organizaciones de Honduras, Panamá, Nicaragua, Guatemala y México. Para Marcus uno de los objetivos de este viaje fue de visitar una escuela en un barrio muy pobre en Managua. El grupo fue invitado a ver una danza de niños y también tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar la comunidad. En esta conferencia creció una red larga con organizaciones que trabajan sobre diferentes temas pero tienen la misma visión que es de ayudar a los niños. Ojala que Guaruma puede colaborar con uno o dos de estas organizaciones en el futuro.
In January 2009, Guaruma was invited to participate in the Global Fund for Children’s conference in Managua, Nicaragua. Assistant Director, Marcus Sabini was honored to attend the weekend conference which featured guest speaker, Laura Sarvide, from Mexico. Her topic was how to strengthen your organization or Fortalecimiento Institucional and these topics will serve Guaruma well in the future. The conference featured non-profit organizations from all over Central America, including Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Mexico. For Marcus, one of the highlights of the trip was visiting a small school in a very poor section of Managua. Our group was greeted by a dance performance by local students and we got to explore the community a bit. This conference created a large network of strong organizations working in a lot of different sectors but with the same overall vision of helping children. Hopefully Guaruma can find one or two organizations to collaborate with in the future.

Francisco CABANAS CADILLO es licenciado en Biología, graduado de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras, y pasante de la Maestría en Dirección Empresarial.

”Durante los últimos 5 años, he estado trabajando en aspectos de capacitaciones y desarrollo de capacidades en jóvenes de comunidades rurales de la costa norte, lo que me motivo a poder retomar un arduo y muy bien planificado trabajo de desarrollo para los jóvenes de la Cuenca del Rio Cangrejal, desarrollado por parte de GUARUMA bajo la Dirección de mi amigo y colega Jimmy ANDINO, a quien agradezco la oportunidad que me brinda de poder seguir en el intento de apoyar a la juventud de la Cuenca del Cangrejal y deseándole que sus nuevos retos estén llenos de sabiduría y éxito.

Esperamos poder mantener y asegurar el buen trabajo realizado hasta la fecha, con la intención de brindar tanto a la organización como a sus jóvenes miembros nuevas alternativas de sostenibilidad que permitan crecimiento tanto educativo como económico de la Cuenca del Cangrejal, enfocados en actividades turísticas y productivas sostenible lideradas por las personas de la comunidad, logrando con esto, convertir a la Cuenca del Rio Cangrejal ese orgullo natural de los Hondureños.”

"Over the past 5 years, I've been working on aspects of training and skills development among youth in rural communities of the north coast, which is why I can pick up a hard and very well-planned development work for young people in the River Cangrejal area developed from GUARUMA led by my friend and colleague Jimmy ANDINO, whom I thank for the opportunity to be able to continue in the attempt to support the youth of the Cangrejal area and wishing that his new challenges are full of wisdom and success. We hope to maintain and ensure the good work done to date, with the intention of providing both the organization and its young members new options for sustainability to both education and economic growth of the Cangrejal focused on tourism and productive sustainable activities, led by the people in the community, achieving this, making the River Cangrejal the natural pride of Hondurans. Nuevo techo para aula Guaruma y la de los kinders

Gracias a la donación y colaboración del Sr. JOE HOLLER, miembro de la Junta Directiva de Guaruma, los alumnos de Guaruma y los Kínder ya pueden tener clases bajo un techo seguro que impide que la lluvia entre. María LOBO - Maestra de los Kínder, y los miembros de Guaruma agradecen fuertemente al Sr. Joe y a todos sus trabajadores profesionales, que en tres días lograron cambiar todo el techo para proteger a nuestros jóvenes y así permitirles mejorar las condiciones de aprendizaje. El Sr Joe recibió una tarjeta de parte de los niños de los Kínder que hicieron un diseño y de los jaguares, estudiantes de Guaruma, que escribieron unas cartas para agradecerle.

Guaruma staff members and Kindergarten teacher Maria Lobo thank you for the hardworking staff who finished this project in 3 days. Now the students of Guaruma and the Kinder can have classes under a new and safe roof that protects them from rain. Joe Holler received a thank you card drawn by the Kinder kids with messages from the Jaguars group of students of Guaruma.

Un Nuevo Profesor de Computación en Las Mangas y en El Pital

Guaruma les introduce al nuevo Instructor de Computación en la comunidad de Las Mangas y del Pital: José Miguel Cantarero Enamorado, 19 anos.
“Soy un técnico en Computación que esta a la disposición de Guaruma para apoyar en todo lo que pueda. Trabajo para Guaruma los fines de semana, por motivo que trabajo en la Ceiba como empleado laboral de Pesca del Atlántico S de RL.
Por los momentos no estoy estudiando, pero estudiar la carrera de Ingeniería Electrónica en la universidad es una de mis metas este año 2009.
Mi objetivo con los estudiantes de Guaruma es que aprendan lo que especifique en mi plan de trabajo, con los recursos y la participación que ellos me presten.”
Agradecemos a José Miguel por manejar su tiempo con mucha energia y motivación para poder dar las clases ademas de su trabajo diario.

Guaruma has a new Teacher of Computers and Softwares, for the communities of Las Mangas y el Pital: José Miguel Cantarero Enamorado, 19 years old.
“I have technical experience in Computers. And I am really motivated to help and support Guaruma. I will be giving classes on Fridays and Saturdays, as I am working as an employee in “Pesca del Atlantico S de RL” in la Ceiba.

El año pasado estuvo en clase de Desarrollo Sostenible y Medioambiente ademas de mi tiempo de trabajo. Fue bastante interesante, pero necesitaba incrementar mis conocimientos. Jimmy Andino, who worked as the Director of Guaruma for nearly three years, is leaving his position after years of hard work and dedication. He has been helping greatly during this transitional period as the torch has now been passed to our new Director Francisco Cabañas.

Thanks to the work he did, Guaruma succeeded with new sponsorships through strengthening activities for youth in the community of Las Mangas and El Pital. Global Fund for Children visit

Susana Shapiro del Global Fund for Children visitó Guaruma en agosto para repasar nuestras actividades y para entender mejor nuestra operación. Shapiro se había encontrado ya con director Jimmy Andino de Guaruma en Washington DC mientras que Jimmy assistía a conferencias en los E.E.U.U. por 3 semanas en agosto. Shapiro se sentó adentro en clase de la fotografía de Marco Sabini con el Tucanes mientras que salieron tomar cuadros alrededor del sendero Guaruma. Muchos estudiantes en Las Mangas hecho cartas por ella para dar las gracias por las donaciones abundantes de computadoras y de cámaras.

Susanna Shapiro of Global Fund for Children visited Guaruma in August to review our activities and to better understand our operation. Shapiro had already met with Guaruma Director Jimmy Andino in Washington DC as Jimmy was attending conferences in the USA for 3 weeks in August. Shapiro sat in on Marcus Sabini’s photography class with the Tucanes as they went out to take pictures around the Guaruma trail. Many students in Las Mangas made thank you cards for her in order to give thanks for the generous donations of computers and cameras.

The Jaguares have been studying photojournalism for the entire semester and each one of them now have their own blogs on the internet. Instructor de Ambiente en Las Mangas Mario Mejia organizó un mural que se pintará en Guaruma que implicaba a nuestros estudiantes con artistas locales de La Ceiba. El mural fue terminado en un día el sábado 4 de octubre con ayuda de 20 estudiantes. La característica principal del mural es una cascada rodeada por la fauna y la flora que se encuentra en La Ceunca. Fue hecho posible con ayuda de Humane Society International.El Mural no fue el unico proyecto en Sabado 4 de Octubre. El nuevo orquideario en Guaruma Las Mangas fue comenzado para reemplazer la vieja estructura. Los días despues de sabado Los Jaguares terminó más adelante el techo para la estructura durante su clase del ambiente. En breve periodo de tiempo las orquídeas florecerán y Guaruma tendrá un orquideario de funcionamiento para exposiciónar.

Las Mangas Environmental Science teacher Mario Mejia organized a mural to be painted at Guaruma involving our students as well as local artists from La Ceiba. The mural was completed in one day on Saturday, October 4 with help from over 20 students. The mural’s main feature is a waterfall surrounded by wildlife that is found around La Ceunca. It was made possible with assistance from the Humane Society International.Not only was the mural completed on Saturday but also a new Orquideario at Guaruma Las Mangas was started, as the old structure needed replacing. A couple days later the Jaguares completed the roof for the structure during their environment class. In short time the orchids will be blooming and Guaruma will have a functioning orquideario for exhibition.

GUARUMA Services took a step forward in promoting its services such as guided trails, horse riding, the Cabañas del Bosque, scientific tourism, training for tour guides, the Salón GUARUMA and the photos and designs of the students (menus for restaurants, posters, brochures). We designed a folder which contains all the necessary information about GUARUMA and its products, so our clients will have a better idea of our work. Con el apoyo de Humane Society Internacional (HSI), GUARUMA logro editar el cd ambiental interactivo ¨Tres aventuras ambientales en Honduras¨. El objetivo del cd es la enseñanza interactiva del ambiente, ecologia y de los ecosistemas de la costa norte para niños y jóvenes a través de juegos y fotografías. En este proyecto participaron estudiantes de Cayos Cochinos, Las Mangas y Roatán. En el 2009, se espera distribuir copias de este Cd en algunas escuelas y colegios de la costa norte del país para su uso como una herramienta de enseñaza ambiental.

Interactive Environmental CD

With the support of Humane Society International (HSI), GUARUMA created an interactive environmental CD ¨Tres aventuras ambientales en Honduras¨. The objective of this CD is to teach about the environment, ecology and ecosystems of the north coast through games and photography. Students from Cayos Cochinos, Las Mangas and Roatan participated in this project. Proyecto Fortaleciendo el Ecoturismo en el Cangrejal

En Septiembre 2008 y después de un año de ejecución por GUARUMA, el proyecto ¨Fortaleciendo el ecoturismo en la cuenca del Cangrejal a través de la participación comunitaria´ ha finalizado exitosamente. Entre los objetivos de este proyecto estaban el fortalecimiento de ocho grupos locales ecoturisticos (artesanías, costuras, restaurantes, hoteles, campamentos etc), afiches, separadores de libros, trifolios, gorras y camisas para los grupos, la construcción del sendero La Vista (4 Km), el diseño y activación de la página de turismo del Cangrejal y la rehabilitación de un centro de información en las Mangas. Environmental Campaign for the Cangrejal

Since the beginning of this year, GUARUMA has been promoting an environmental campaign ¨Cangrejal Watershed, natural pride of Honduras¨. Honduran Minister of Tourism visits the Cuenca

Recientemente saludaron el nuevo ministerio de turismo en Honduras que ha visitado La Cuenca y recibio una presentación de Guaruma en Las Mangas. Simon Olaeye presentó el nuevo Web site de Cangrejal Ecoturismo (www.cangrejal.com) así como los nuevos folletos y productos para una variedad de negocios en La Cuenca. Después de la presentación de Guaruma y de EcoCangrejal en la sala de clase trataron a toda la huésped a un almuerzo agradable en la restautant de Las Cabañas en Las Mangas.

Recently the new Honduras head of tourism visited La Cuenca and was greeted with a presentation from Guaruma in Las Mangas. Simon Olaeye presented the new Cangrejal Ecoturismo website (www.cangrejal.com) as well as new brochures and products for a variety of businesses in La Cuenca. After the Guaruma and EcoCangrejal presentation in the classroom all of the guest were treated to a nice lunch at the Cabañas restaurant located just above Guaruma in Las Mangas.

Peacepassers.org Makes a Donation to Las Mangas Soccer Club

Peacepassers is a small organization with the mission to bring soccer equipment to rural communities across the world. Student and Instructor Photograph Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge
During the first week of April Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge contracted Guaruma for a photography assignment. Instructor Mac Stone and student photographer Camilo Lopez visited the refuge for two days photographing a new trail for brochures and promotional posters. The trip was a unique experience for Camilo to photograph under guidelines and deadlines, opening his eyes to the marketability of his talents.

Brand New Computer Classroom for El Pital!

This month saw the opening of the new Oficina de Computacion, El Pital. The new office will serve as a class for all 28 students of Guaruma El Pital.

After months of hard toil by Tonio Funez the new Oficina de Computacion was completed shortly after Semana Santa. The Staff of Guaruma, students and members of the community spent a long hot weekend painting the aula inside and out and generally readying it for use. Classes commenced in the last week of March and we are currently running two classes a week for each of the three groups of children in the program the Zompopos, the Iguanas and the Gavilanes.

At the moment we have 5 working computers kindly donated by a Swedish organization in the Oficina de Computacion. We are hoping to increase the number of computers to the full quota needed of ten over the coming year.

The children are currently learning about the basic functions of a computer before moving on to programs and project based work later in the year. With our cross-disciplinary approach here at El Pital we are working to combine the photography and computacion elements of the program as much as possible this year allowing the children to start experimenting with combining text and their images.

As Guaruma El Pital develops, the staff and students work hard to build a stronger sense of community through the educational opportunities and programs Guaruma has to offer.

The student’s started this year’s classes with gusto, by doing a week of exciting teambuilding skills and problem solving activities. We have developed the program around the idea of “the five finger contract,” which encompasses the values and expectations we encourage in the class, at home, and in social situations. Each finger represents a word such as security, commitment, respect, inclusion, and fun. Working to develop these values in students, we are taking a holistic approach to include the families and community. Our goal is to make the program a part of the student’s lives and help them develop life skills that will aid them in the future.

Beginning in February, the students in El Pital are now participating in classes in four disciplines; English, Computers, Photography and Environmental Science. In January the program received a generous donation of $1000 from Robert and Marlene Smith of Bridgman, MI, to purchase 9 digital cameras. For the last couple months the student’s have been exploring their community and natural world through the lens, while learning the basic ideas of photography. Also as a program and community project, the students are in the process of building their own garden, in which they will be responsible for the construction, care and maintenance.

Along with our community approach, this year is very interactive for us as well. We have added one night each week where the entire community is invited to participate in a specific activity so far we have had a guitar jam session, movie nights, an English conversation hour and a parents’ night.

"My name is Victor Kondel, I am 19 years old and a volunteer from Germany. I am doing this voluntary year as a substitute for the German Military Service. The first half of my year I spent in the capital Tegucigalpa, working in the office of my exchange organization. This past February I changed my project and moved from Tegucigalpa to La Ceiba. Here at Guaruma I am a technical assistant and my job is to teach children various computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Webdesign. I am living and working in the small community 'Las Mangas' and I am glad to be here for another 4 months"

Laura Knight is a British volunteer also here with ICYE. She will be with us until January 2009 as a Computer Instructor and Graphic Design and Communications Assistant.

DONACIONES

En Febrero y como parte del Proyecto ¨Fortalecimiento del Ecoturismo en la cuenca del Río Cangrejal¨, GUARUMA y el Programa de Servicios recibieron del Proyecto USAID-MIRA la donación de un equipo de computadoras, binoculares, GPS, impresora proyector, guías de campo, etc para fortalecer las actividades de guiaza ecoturísticas en la cuenca del Río Cangrejal.

Campaña de Biodiversidad
En Marzo inicio la ¨ Campaña de Conservación de Biodiversidad de la Cuenca del Río Cangrejal ¨ a través de los medios de comunicación radio y televisión a nivel regional. Esta campaña tiene como propósito la elaboración de dos anuncios televisivos y dos cuñas radiales narradas por los estudiantes de GUARUMA para ser promocionados en la sociedad civil. Esta campaña es patrocinada por Humane Society Internacional (HSI). Marzo a Junio 2008.

Boletín Ecocangrejal 2008
A partir de Febrero y con el patrocinio de New England Biolab Foundation, se esta publicando mensualmente el Boletín Ambiental del ¨Ecocangrejal 2008¨ elaborado por los estudiantes avanzados de GUARUMA El Pital y Las Mangas.

EVENTOS Y ACTIVIDADES

Con éxito recientemente GUARUMA Servicios a través de Simon Olaleye, instructor de GUARUMA finalizo la capacitación de computación de los miembros comunitarios de los grupos ecoturisticos de la Cuenca del Río Cangrejal. Durante tres meses, trece (13) personas locales fueron capacitadas en los programas básicos de computación (Microsoft Office e Internet).

In February as part of the current Project ¨ Ecotourism Strength at Cangrejal River Watershed¨, GUARUMA Program Services was very happy to receive Project a donation of computers, binoculars, GPS, printers, guide books from USAID-MIRA. This equipment will significantly help us in our guiding activities at Cangrejal area.

Projects

Biodiversity Campaign
In March we started the ¨ Biodiversity Conservation Cangrejal Watershed Campaignning,¨ working on radio and TV spots for the La Ceiba region. We launched this campaign with an event kidly hosted by Expatriados, La Ceiba where we unvieled two tv spots and two radio spots made and narrated by the GUARUMA kids. This campaign was made possible with sponsorship from the by Humane Society International (HSI) and we hope will go a long way to promoting the Biodiversity of the Cuenca del Cangreal.

Ecocangrejal 2008

Since February, with sponsorhip from the New England Biolab Foundation, we have been running a project to produce an Environmental newspaper, made and published monthly by the advanced students from GUARUMA El Pital and Las Mangas. We are currently producing the third edition and we hope to make this available for download on the Guaruma Website in the very near future.

Other Acitivities

Through GUARUMA Services Simon Olaleye, GUARUMA instructor, successfully finished a Computer Training Course for 13 members of the communities of the Cangrejal River. During three months, those members were trained in basic computer programs including Microsoft Office and Internet programs. This work was made possible with funding for MIRAand has improved the computer literacy of local people and in turn will greatly benefit their local business.

GUARUMA Student visits the States for NANPA Annual Sumit.

In October of 2007 one of our students, Orlin Murillo was one of ten students around the world to win a scholarship for the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) annual summit.

After receiving the news from NANPA Orlin started a long and arduous process of legalizing his trip to the states. He spent countless hours waiting in seemingly endless lines only to be told there was no paper, no ink, the manager wasn’t in, or my favorite “We just can’t today,” from the civil office in La Ceiba. Finally after getting his Honduran ID card in Tegucigalpa (16 hour trip) Orlin could apply for his passport in January. Once the passport was expedited he could then make an appointment with the American embassy in the capitol which was scheduled for the 20th of February, only three days before he was to leave for Florida.

With letters of support from Fotokids, Global Fund for Children, Guaruma, NANPA, and the director of USAID, Orlin, his mother, and I waited in line at the embassy for 6 hours. While inside the building we heard over the loudspeaker the practiced phrase “No, I’m sorry, your visa is not approved,” and watched the slumped shoulders and crying families shuffle slowly out the front door. We were the last ones interviewed and luckily the woman behind the window was supportive of Orlin’s talents and dedication to photography. Visa approved - tears of happiness.

Upon arriving to the airport the night of our flight (1:00 AM) Orlin proudly approached the Spirit Airlines ticket counter with his official American visa. Without remorse the attendant handed back his passport and said he couldn’t go without a permission slip signed by his mother. In a panic, I called Jimmy who mustered up a final effort to get Orlin on the plane. Jimmy convinced the migration officer to allow Orlin to travel and finally at 2:00 AM we were in the air on our way to Florida.

The conference was a whirlwind of photography workshops, meetings with the pros, and chronic sleep deprivation. Orlin’s first three days consisted of going out in the field and learning to use a Canon SLR. The students would come back to the hotel to upload images, critique photos, and then reflect on the day through intimate feedback sessions. Although Orlin did not speak or understand English, I was there to translate every word and to be his voice. Orlin displayed an acute maturity that resonated with the other students. He openly compared his experience in Florida as walking through a magic door into the land of Narnia; a land of dreams and endless possibilities.

After the three days in the field Orlin attended the conference with 600 other professional photographers listening to keynote speakers from National Geographic and other famous publications. On the last day Orlin was even invited to give a speech about his experience with the high school scholarship program and the impact NANPA will have on his life. A fellow student translated his words and they received a standing ovation.

The success of the program is hard to measure in quantitative terms. Orlin said that coming to Florida was like “a blind man seeing the world for the first time.” While he benefited from the new friendships, the imparted knowledge from other photographers, and the experience of overseas travel I think it’s just as important to note the positive effect he had on everyone else at the conference. In my four years of attending the conference I have never seen a student group as emotionally cohesive as this year’s. Much of this has to do with Orlin’s ability to open up with such inhibition that he welcomes and sometimes catalyzes discussion and reflection. Not every youth would feel comfortable in his shoes; surrounded by an ocean of foreigners and new isms, asked to jump right in. Honduras should be beaming with pride that they have an ambassador like Orlin.
